John. Disney has killed Star Wars. I want to give my opinion. There shouldn't have been a sequel trilogy because the 'Skywalker Saga' was over. EP1-6 is the Skywalker Saga. They should have made EP7-9 take place hundreds of years into the future. Because that finality of Return of the Jedi doesn't hit home anymore, and the direction of this sequel trilogy has been awful. The OT wasn't perfect. But all 3 were good movies and most of the childish stuff was in Return of the Jedi. (Ewoks & Jabba's Palace come to my mind) The Prequels were hated because they drifted away from the storytelling of the OT, focusing too much on special effects, and having far too much political talk, although I find that very interesting now. I grew up with the prequels and the only one I liked as a kid was Phantom, but only really the pod race and the final duel. I rewatched these films recently and enjoyed all 3 of them. Attack of the Clones wasn't too bad when rewatching it but the dialogue between Anakin and Padme is awful and really ruins the film. Revenge of the Sith is a great film. Phantom had many issues and was really a victim of it's own hype, that being the first Star Wars film in years so naturally everyone hyped it up. Also, I don't think 12 year olds like hearing about Trade Federations and Senates and whatnot. Plotwise all the political talk is important and, was decent world-buliding, and all 3 prequels show how the Republic (and Jedi) fell and the showed the rise of the Empire (and Sith) into a dictatorship. Also how are wars started? By politics. It also showed Anakin's rise to being a Jedi, the chosen one, and his downfall into Darth Vader and shows at the end of Ep6 his redemption. After Ep3, Star Wars didn't need to continue. The story was over. All the books, cartoons, and video games with the Star Wars name added so much for the fans to consume, and things from my view looked fine until Lucas sold them to Disney. The sequel trilogy sucked and sucked big time and I feel sorry for the younger generation who have watched such crap in cinemas and on Disney+ Ep7, as you said is a remake of Ep4. I agree with you that The Last Jedi is far too long and boring, but the deconstruction of Luke was awful and for me ruined the character. Rose Tico wasn't the reason Last Jedi sucked. It was Ruin Johnson's pathetic direction and story. Rey is also too much of a Mary Sue character and there's nothing interesting about her as a character. She's a bland OC that could be filled by anyone. We know nothing about her up until the 3rd frigging movie about her past and even then, it's pathetic. Rey Palpatine? Please. Poe, I barely remembered and Finn to me, is the most interesting character in the Sequels. They ruined his character too! It seemed to me, that there was no plan for the Sequels and Disney went in far too quickly. Rise of Skywalker was a joke of a movie. When I read the opening crawl where it said 'The dead speak!' I instantly lost all hope that this was going to be good. I pity people who like this film. Shocking also was that this was the last Star Wars film that was in cinemas and everything since has been Disney+ exclusive. The issue is that Star Wars under Disney is relying FAR TOO MUCH on Nostalgia. Ever since 2015 Disney has played it safe and has done it far too long. There has been nothing but SLUDGE from Disney in the last few years and there was going to be a breaking point for people. The Acoylte seems to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Disney, personally has become desperate, and doing everything possible to keep fans happy such as creating the Obi-Wan show and the Ashoka show. Again, using Nostagia to hype up shows that turned out to not be that great. The Mandolorian may have started off good but that too has declined as has other Disney+ sludge. Stop eating this poorly made slop and DEMAND better from your franchise. Disney buying Lucasfilm was the worst thing to happen to Star Wars. Critics may like this slop, but Star Wars fans know and deserve so much better. But John, if you like this crap. That's fine.

Sorry for commenting so much but if I don't do it as it comes to me I'll forget. Do you ever think Lucas felt any emotional whiplash when he established how the Jedi (who he has always held as the heroes and being in the right), and people started commenting on how... fashy they are?

I also miss Star Wars on the big screen. I'm working on a new video essay about Phantom Menace and I specifically mention the particular kind of silence that happens when "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...." appears.

While I agree the sequel trilogy has its flaws, I think it's disingenuous to suggest it has nothing to say. Where the prequels were about how authoritarians manipulate crises to strip away people's rights and gather power, the prequels are about how the same authoritarianism we thought was gone can resurface if we become complacent. I mean, the villains are literal neo-Nazis raised on the propaganda of "Make the Galaxy Great Again" and the villain uses a burning cross as a weapon. It's more on-the-nose, but Star Wars has always done a solid job of highlighting the real villains of a given time period. Clone Wars Anakin was a different person than movie Anakin. There's no way to reconcile them as the same guy. Rise of Skywalker gets a lot of flack. And most of it seems to be attributed to the line "Somehow, Palpatine returned." I am genuinely shocked that so many people had an issue with that, given the same thing happened in the old Expanded Universe. The only difference was the comic outright stated that he used cloned bodies, instead of inferring it from the presence of clone vats and a partially-grown Palpatine atrached to life support. And for the TLJ haters, Luke joined the Dark Side and became Palpatine's apprentice, in order to destroy him and end the destructive conflict. You know; the same thing Vader tried to convince him to do in Empire, that he swore he'd never do. Talk about invalidating past actions. But I loved Rise of Skywalker (I am almost 44 and have loved Star Wars for so long I can't remember a time I didn't know it). I am completely happy with the sequel trilogy and still hold that the best of the prequels don't hold a candle to the worst of the sequels.

I think it's an interesting contradiction, which Lucas himself has done as well, to say that Star Wars is a series of movies for 12 year-olds, but then to say that the "boring" politics was the point of The Phantom Menace. The issue wasn't the politics, it was the extended bureaucracy and characters talking about events without the audience ever seeing the effects of those events. As you said, Star Wars is meant to be fun. The taxation of trade routes is not fun, no matter how relevant it was to the time. What makes an audience, especially an audience of kids, sit up and pay attention to taxes? Watch any Robin Hood movie. We don't even know what outcome the Trade Federation wants. Are they pro-taxes? Anti-taxes? Are they the ones levying the taxes? Are the taxes unfair, are people suffering because of them? We don't know because we only see nobility standing in gorgeous buildings. We are <told> people are dying, but we see more people die in the opening 5 minutes of A New Hope than the entire runtime of Phantom Menace. Phantom Menace's problem isn't too much politics; it's too little human emotional connection for the audience buy into.

Sigh, the bombers make sense. A: There is gravity in space, but that doesn't matter. Because... B: There is artificial gravity <in> the bomber. That's how Rose's sister fell in the first place. The bombs are dropped within the ship's artificial gravity, so they keep moving in the same direction once they leave the ship. At least it wasn't like in Revenge of the Sith, where despite having internal gravity, everyone on Grievous' ship started sliding around when it began falling towards Coruscant... Sorry to complain, but you're making good points up to there and that nitpick is so unnecessary

About Hayden Christiansen: I think it's because in his appearances in the later Star Wars series, such as Obi-Wan, we get to see what he can do and who his Anakin can be when he's given good writing. George Lucas I think we can all agree is a terrible writer.

Trust me. I have reached many of the hypothetical conclusions and comparisons as you. 49 yrs old. Remember empire in theaters at 6 in 80. US army veteran 90-99. Star wars I love but it's also terrible. It's an escape. Stories. Entertainment and I'm guilty of being to deep in with it myself. And as an American I wonder how many rigged elections in a row do we need before people wake up and see it for the absolute mess it is currently... oops got to rambling. Love the series. 15:49 ive been in the trenches of Doctor Who canon, I fully agree with your notion, there is no One True Canon of Star Wars sitting in the Vatican. Everyone has their own canon in their head and they can customise it to their heart’s desire.

The idea of canon being a contradicting mess is common in Doctor Who and many other long run sci-fi properties but was uniquely absent thing in Star Wars while it was only 3 and then 6 movies, sure it had expanded universe stuff and that was more ‘out there’ but those could be quarantined from the movies, a heretical text could be denounced and expunged from the sacred text. Before the new movies and shows, the canon was 6 movies written by one man with one voice and so it was uniquely sterilised from shit like Lungbarrow in DW or the SNES games in metal gear for example. I think Star Wars fans are hurt by canon ruptures in ways that other properties are now used to. You said you used to be like that as a fan, so was I, and the reason I loved Last Jedi was because it forced me to see Star Wars as a setting and story, not a rigid set of rules

The last Jedi is probably the best movie in the franchise based off of the cinematography, CGI and sets are all really good. I also love what they did with Luke. Imagine how much worse the film would be if rey showed up and it took 4 mins to convince Luke to help her
